Savor a Sunset

Each year we’re given 365 days, and how many of those days have you searched out and savored a beautiful sunset to put a memorable explanation point at the end your day?

Think about it, every moment is unique and so is every sunset. The sunset you're seeing today, you’ll never see again, even more reason to search it out and savor it.

A favorite spot in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, is Riverfront Park, which overlooks the mighty St. Johns River in a neighborhood called San Marco. Just off San Marco Blvd., between Landon Avenue and Laverne Street is the sweetest spot for watching the sun slowly sink into the west. You won’t be alone as many locals and visitors position their folding chairs, blankets, even picnic bags & baskets on the narrow bulkhead just at the water’s edge to enjoy the relaxing moments of the day’s end.

Isn’t it funny…it seems that we usually only make time for sunsets when we’re on vacation. Why is that? You really don’t need to be in an exotic location chilling out to infuse your day with wonder and stop to enjoy an end of the day sunset.

I’ve spent a lot of satisfying hours scouting locations around the country and around the world, in rental cars and on foot searching for “the spot” to bring my crew back to for a sensational sunset shot. What is it about sunsets that make them mesmerizing? Is it their warm colors seamlessly blending like a watercolor painting, or the way everything is washed with a soft touch of golden light, or is it the brilliant sun ball slowly sinking out of sight which holds the power to stop you in your tracks? Whatever it is, it’s worth the watch.

No matter where you are, the sun rises and sets every single day. So, there’s no reason why you shouldn't make it a priority to take a few minutes to infuse your day with wonder, to stop and enjoy it, and remind yourself just how beautiful life is when you choose to see it. They don’t call it “magic hour” for nothing.

Go out and find your favorite sunset spot and savor its golden memories!

Travel Tips

  • Just around the corner from Riverfront Park is European Street Café (on San Marco Blvd). Order up a muffuletta sandwich (one of the best in the city) , take it to go and and enjoy the sunset. https://europeanstreet.com/san-marco

  • If you’re in the mood for an authentic crafted cocktail after your sunset watching, head down the street into the historic center of San Marco Square to Grape & Grain Exchange. Grab an outdoor café table, sip your cocktail and people watch. https://grapeandgrainexchange.com

  • Believe it or not, some research shows that sunsets bring physical benefits that have been proven to relieve stress. Sunsets will put you in a better mood!
